*Secure website hosting with Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) Certificates & https
HTTPS (Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure) is an internet communication protocol that protects the integrity and confidentiality of your users' data between the user's computer and the website. For example, when a user enters data into a form on your site in order to subscribe to updates or purchase a product, HTTPS protects that user's personal information between the user and the site. Users expect a secure online experience when providing data via a website.
Google presentation on SSL compliance
Google prefers sites that are trusted and certified with 2048-bit key encryption certificates. This is because users can be guaranteed that the site will encrypt their information for that extra level of security. However, you should understand that getting a certificate can be an involved task (which is why it allows for higher ranking benefits).
What happens if your website is not https compliant?
As of 2016, Google is giving https compliant sites preferential ranking in their search engines for sites that are https compliant. That means if your site uses standard
http, it will rank lower than sites that are https.
Starting in 2017, Google Chrome will flag non-compliant sites as insecure, which will have an adverse impact on traffic to non-compliant sites as shown below.
Do you use the Geolocation API in your web app? Starting with Chrome version 50, the geolocation API will no longer work for insecure origins. This means that unless you've set up HTTPS on your site, it won't work anymore.
